MALINA- Rouge
For August's Goddess, I wanted to do a shade that related to the 100% solar eclipse we're going to experience here in West Union, SC.
We're just a few tenths of a mile from the path of totality, so I can't put into words how excited I am about this event! I've been researching eclipse mythology in different cultures and came across the Inuit story of Malina and her Brother, Anningan. Malina is the Inuit Goddess of the Sun, and her Brother is the God of the Moon. This is interesting, because in most cultures, men are solar deities and women are lunar deities.
Malina's color is a rouge with warm buffed red tones, overlaid by pure silver shimmer, representing her brother Anningan, the Moon.
A recap of the myth:
Malina is the Sun goddess of the Inuit people who live in Greenland. The word "Inuit" means "people."
Malina and her brother, the Moon god Anningan, lived together. They got into a terrible fight and Malina spread dirty, black grease all over her brother's face. In fear, she ran as far as she could into the sky and became the Sun. Anningan chased after her and became the Moon.
Anningan often forgets to eat, so he gets thinner as the days go by. Every month, the Moon disappears for three days while Anningan eats. He then returns to chase his sister once again.
This eternal chase makes the Sun alternate in the sky with the Moon. When there is a solar eclipse, Anningan has caught up with Malina.
